InstaForex Gold XAUUSD 2026: Spreads, Lots & Swaps

InstaForex XAUUSD gold trading guide covering contract size, trading spreads, margin and risk

Research note — October 2026: InstaForex publishes precious-metal symbols including GOLD.m and XAUUSD.m, whose contract specifications should be checked separately. Quotes on the public specifications page may be delayed, and figures can change by account, client entity, and market conditions. This guide provides education, not live dealing prices or investment advice.

Searching for the InstaForex XAUUSD spread or the “lot size for gold” can produce misleading answers when the writer assumes all gold contracts are interchangeable. The broker's own metals specification table presents more than one gold-linked symbol. It is essential to inspect the exact instrument displayed on your server before calculating a trading position.

GOLD.m and XAUUSD.m: Why the Symbol Matters

On the public InstaForex metal specifications observed during this research, GOLD.m shows a contract size of 100 troy ounces per quoted lot, while XAUUSD.m shows 500 troy ounces. These are observations from specific broker-listed symbols, not a rule for every server, account or future revision. A contract that's five times as large can produce five times the dollar sensitivity for the same price movement and nominal lot count.

Example symbolBroker-displayed contract sizeIllustrative moveGross change for one displayed lot
GOLD.m100 oz$1 per ozAbout $100
XAUUSD.m500 oz$1 per ozAbout $500

These calculations assume a full quoted lot, USD price changes and no fees. For a 0.01-lot position the monetary difference scales proportionately, provided the broker's exact lot convention supports that order. Check contract currency, minimum size and allowable increments inside your own MetaTrader terminal.

How to Translate a Gold Spread Into Dollars

For a conventional USD-priced ounce contract, an approximate spread cost equals ask–bid price distance × contract ounces × actual number of lots. A hypothetical $0.20 bid–ask price difference across 100 oz gives $20 for one lot. Across 500 oz it gives $100, before any commission, financing or slippage. This is purely an arithmetic illustration, not a measured InstaForex quote.

Beware of a trading table that says the spread is “15 points” or commission is “10” without defining whether the column uses points, pip units or another account-specific convention. The official specifications explain the meaning of spread, commission, lot and tick; separate instrument tables carry the actual conditions. Do not substitute a EUR/USD pip-value calculator for a gold contract-value calculation.

Gold Trading Costs Across InstaForex Accounts

The broker's account overview describes Standard, Pro, Zero, Raw and Cent structures. A tighter stated spread may coincide with a separate commission, and an account requiring a different contract convention can alter your total cost. Compare identical symbol suffixes and equal notional ounce exposure rather than assuming one lot is equivalent everywhere.

Our InstaForex Trading Costs research explains the general spread-plus-commission-plus-swap model. Here the additional gold-specific problem is identifying what one price point represents economically.

Overnight Financing and the Holding-Period Effect

Gold positions maintained through rollover may incur a financing charge or credit, and long and short positions can carry different rates. The displayed swap may change; the broker explicitly warns that actual swap may sometimes differ from values in the table. Note the server's time zone, weekly rollover conventions, holidays, and how many nights you plan to hold.

For a strategy that holds a gold position for five trading days, comparing only entry spreads is incomplete. Estimate the financing over every rollover and monitor the rate within the actual account. Avoid generalizing the Wednesday triple-swap convention for spot forex to every gold product without confirming the current contract terms.

Margin, Volatility and Economic Exposure

Margin is collateral, not a maximum potential loss. When gold gaps or moves suddenly, a leveraged position can decline much faster than the initial margin requirement might suggest. A $5 adverse price move on a 100 oz position illustrates a $500 gross move before dealing costs; the same price change on a 500 oz position illustrates $2,500. These examples emphasize exposure, not forecast outcomes.

Determine your permissible cash loss before placing a trade, then calculate position size from contract ounces and stop distance. Stop orders are risk tools but may fill beyond their requested prices in a rapid market. Avoid opening several correlated gold or metals positions simply because each individually appears small.

Trading Sessions, Symbol Suffixes and Execution

The official metals page publishes a trading session for gold-related instruments and flags possible time adjustments when daylight saving changes. Treat published hours as operational guidance; holidays and special market conditions can produce interruptions or wider spreads. Before a position, inspect your platform's active symbol specification, current bid/ask, and margin preview.

Collect quotes across multiple market periods when comparing costs; do not extrapolate from one promotional spread minimum. Demo accounts can teach the mechanics but do not prove future live fill quality. Keep a journal of spreads, slippage, swap and realized transaction costs.

Gold Trading Research Checklist

  1. Write down the exact symbol (including any .m suffix) and contracting entity.
  2. Record contract ounces per displayed lot, tick size and point value.
  3. Normalize notional ounces across different account types.
  4. Observe bid and ask over several sessions, including the time you intend to trade.
  5. Calculate both-side commission plus overnight financing.
  6. Calculate expected cash loss from the stop distance and prepare for slippage.
  7. Check margin, stop-out and server trading hours before executing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are InstaForex GOLD.m and XAUUSD.m the same size?

The broker's public table lists different contract ounces for these two symbols. Always check the specification on your own account before using that figure.

Is a 0.01-lot gold position always the same dollar risk?

No. The contract ounces, price movement, currency and server rules determine monetary exposure.

Does a zero starting spread make gold trading free?

No. Actual spreads, commissions, financing and execution differences still matter.

Can a stop-loss fully guarantee the chosen maximum loss?

No. Market gaps or extreme volatility may produce worse fills.
